In an attempt to climb back to the top of the mobile phone market, Nokia unveiled a new, fast mobile phone with a 41 megapixel camera and in doing so, seems to have caught the attention of their intended target, everyone.

Gadget freaks in Europe attending the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona say that they have been blown away by the new phone by Nokia and that the show, which features all of the latest innovations in the industry, is really getting the attention it wanted.

Another phone making a hit with the hip crowd is another phone from a Chinese maker, which they claim is the fastest in the world. Fast or not, the Nokia phone has a camera feature that so far is unrivaled in the industry, the 808 Pure View, and has caused some of the delegates at the show to beam with some well-deserved pride as they seem to be making good on their promise that the show would offer the market some very significant surprises.

The Nokia Pure View is said to have many of the same capabilities of professional cameras that cost thousand of dollars more than the new mobile device. At $600, the Pure View is something of a bargain and industry pundits expect that the price for the latest, greatest in mobile phones will likely fall further, as is often the case with new techie gadgets. In an effort to regain some market share that they have lost to Apple and BlackBerry recently Nokia also launched a lower-cost version of its most popular phone, the Lumia.

I am continually amazed by the progress made with all of these devices. Its hard to imagine what a cell phone is able to do now versus how limited they were just a few short years ago. They are already the hand-held computers that were once only within the grasp of Jame Bond.

Gas Prices Rise Again

Gas prices have been on a steady increase over the last month and today was no different. With prices soaring ever higher, today marked the 20th day in a row of prices going higher and soon most cities around the country will be looking down at $4/gallon gasoline, for those places that aren’t already looking down at that very scary number.

Today, the average price for a gallon of gasoline topped $3.70 up slightly from Friday, with prices just over a month ago at $3.41 per gallon on average across the country. Prices are already over $4 per gallon in California, Alaska, and Hawaii, and most other states are close to breaching this level.

Many different things are cited for causing the price of gasoline to be moving steadily higher but none of them are making the U.S. consumer any happier, and that is bad news for the Obama Administration. One of the main reasons being bandied about the news shows lately is the situation in the Middle East, now there’s news for you, and in particular growing tension with Iran. Between Israeli threats to bomb nuclear facilities in Iran and Iranian threats to close down the Straits of Hormuz, the main seaway for Middle East oil to the rest of the world, every bit of saber rattling takes the price of gasoline higher.

Another reason for higher prices, at least according to those trying to tell us all why, is the growing U.S. economy, or at least an economy that is clawing its way back. The same goes for the economies of the entire West, which just a couple of short years ago were hanging on the brink of disaster and are now said to be improving. The better economic conditions in the West means more demand for oil and thereby higher gas prices.

Last but not least on the short list is the ever-present demand for oil by countries whose economies are growing like bacteria in a petri dish. Most often cited here are China and India, who consume an ever larger share of the world’s oil supply even when their economies are not growing as quickly as they once were given the sheer size of these countries.

My take:

How about the other factor that isn’t often mentioned, that the suits controlling the supply of oil around the world know exactly how to manipulate the market to achieve whatever ends they want. At this point I’m sure that they would like to see President Obama be a one term president so up goes the price of gas. But they won’t let it go too high because then other fuel sources could become more economically feasible and they wouldn’t want to see us break our addiction that easily.

Online Coupons Refused by Stores

Online companies like Groupon and Living Social are all the rage with their advocates lauding the companies for bringing them great deals for purchasing everything from a meal at a high end restaurant to the latest Apple gadgets at prices that you can’t find at the store. How do they do it? Well, they make a deal with the business owners and then by the shear volume of business generated by them, the business owner is still happy even when giving things away. The problem can arise however when people go online and buy discount coupons to a particular business and then the business does not honor the coupon.

Why does this happen? Well, in many cases the coupons have been purchased from smaller online entities that never made a deal with the business in the first place. They call that fraud, even when it occurs online it is still fraud. One such company that has been dogged by claims of selling coupons to businesses without their permission is MobileSpinach, who have repeatedly been accused of selling fake coupons.

The owner of MobileSpinach, John Vitti, says that the problem with the supposedly fake coupons stems from several issues ranging from the short memories of the business owner to overzealous salespeople from affiliates. In any case, Vitti says that he is happy to provide the client with a full refund and says that he has done so in the past when these incidents have come up.

Problems with MobileSpinach have been found nationwide and are not so easily dismissed with mere suggestion of misunderstanding. One Long Island, N.Y. merchant recalls a story where he was approached by MobileSpinach to buy into one of their promotions and despite declining to do so, he saw that the ad for discounts at his deli were posted on the MobilSpinach Web site anyway.

While Vitti seems to have an answer to all of the complaints, merchants say that it causes a problem for them with their customers, some of whom feel that it is the business itself that doesn’t want to honor the coupon and not a problem with MobileSpinach. The PR issue itself is something not addressed by Vitti.

Sounds to me like Mobile Spinach is trying to pull a fast one and even if not, if you can’t keep a good handle on your business you shouldn’t be in that business. Excuses like the merchants just don’t remember our deal or that the sales people made a mistake just don’t cut it if you ask me.

The complex itself has 57 condos and Oprah’s unit was on the 36th floor of the building and measured some 2500 square feet. In addition it had a 768 foot terrace.

The wall to ceiling, windowed condo unit was the star attraction in the building with a triangle-shaped living room, and kitchen that would be the envy of any Iron Chef, though many doubt that Oprah would ever have used or have any need for such an opulent kitchen area, a dining room, two bedrooms, and an attached bathroom.

For the Queen of the Penthouse, the master bedroom had three walk-in closets, a jet spray bathtub and a shower space to die for, at least according to those lucky enough to have used the elegant facilities.

My take:

I like Oprah and I think that she does some wonderful things. So I would bet dollars to donuts that she bought this apartment for someone else. But even if she didn’t, she has more than enough money to afford whatever she wants and she is generous enough to keep the rest of the rabble from accusing her of conspicuous consumption.

Motion Rejected in Abuse Case

A Philadelphia judged rejected a motion by the attorneys defending the Philadelphia Archdiocese from sexual abuse charges stemming from accusations that priests in the diocese were abusing children. The motion asked the court to throw out the charges against Monsignor William Lynn, in which he is accused of two counts of endangering the welfare of a child in connection with the larger sex abuse charges being fought by the Philadelphia Archdiocese, on the basis that Lynn did indeed inform his superior, Cardinal Bevilacqua, that over 35 priests in his charge were suspected of abusing children.

The defense cited a memo from Lynn to Bevilacqua, who died on January 31, in which the monsignor advised the Cardinal of the situation and that Cardinal Bevilacqua then ordered the memo to be destroyed. The defense says that the memo shows clear evidence that Lynn did indeed report the suspected incidents to his superior, as was his responsibility in the matter. The judge hearing the motion said that there was legal basis for the defense’s motion to have the case dropped on the basis of the existence of the memo.

The memo, which was recently found in the safe of the Office of the Clergy in the Philadelphia Archdiocese, is clear evidence of the abuse cases and knowledge of the abuse cases and is indeed the smoking gun that will be used against Lynn, according to the prosecutors on the case against Lynn.

From 1992 to 2004, Lynn was in charge of a church investigation into allegations that priests in the diocese were abusing children. The state maintains that Lynn is guilty of contributing to the abuse of these children by allowing the abuse to continue long after he already knew of the cases reported in the Philadelphia diocese. The memo that the defense has presented as evidence on Lynn’s behalf is now likely to be used against him as this trial moves along.

Throw the book at him. The fact that the diocese would spend the money to defend these guys almost makes me want to turn in my membership card. Feds Can’t Help Housing Market

The housing market continues to be one of the biggest drags on the U.S. economy. And while recent data suggests that the worst may very well indeed be over for the housing market, the rise from the ashes has been slow to materialize and there are still many factors that are working against it. That is a big problem for the U. S. economy because with such a consumer driven based financial footing, the housing industry is a vital sector for U.S. consumers and the overall health of the economy.

At this point the Federal Reserve Bank is hard-pressed to come up with any additional measures that will be of any appreciable help to the housing market. Some economists use the analogy of pushing on a string when discussing what the Fed can and should do next. Pushing on a string doesn’t produce much in the way of results and many feel that this is the case now with the Fed and the housing market. Top economists in the U.S. said just as much in a paper that they presented to the Monetary Policy Forum at the Chicago Booth School of Business last week.

The academics and policy makers at the forum discussed how at this point the Fed may not have many tools left at its disposal for assisting the housing market. Interest rate policy, one of the many tools at its disposal, has very little room to further reduce interest rates throughout the yield curve as rates are near zero in the front end, and just over 2% as far out as ten to thirty years on Treasury bonds. The Fed can do little more to bring down rates, which at these levels are not problematic to the housing industry.

Many at the forum said that at this point, the problems in the housing market are out of the hands of the central bank. many feel that it is time for the Administration and those overseeing the banking industry to do more to take the glut of homes in foreclosure off the market and in doing so, to remove the biggest source of problems in the industry, the huge inventory of foreclosed and about to be foreclosed homes on the market.

My take:

The feds should do something to make the refinancing process easier for everyone so that we can take advantage of the lower rates for mortgages. What good is it for rates to be at historically low levels but for banks to be so tightfisted when it comes to making a loan?

Oscars Too Stodgy?

The Oscars are the big event for the movie industry, at least that’s what they are supposed to be. And since having made a big push to get “younger” just one year ago with James Franco and Anne Hathaway, it seems to some that the Academy has gone back to its roots as a somewhat theatrical event because perhaps it doesn’t know how to move forward.

A few events worked against this year’s Oscar extravaganza such as the self-destruction of director Brett Ratner, Eddie Murphy bailing on the show, and dust-covered Billy Crystal being commandeered into service despite not having been part of the Oscars since 2004. In addition, writers for the event seemed so bent on being nostalgic with constant references to movies of the past and the way the old films made you feel that it was almost impossible to not envision yourself in your grandmothers living room watching the event on a small black and white tube with rabbit ear antennas rising up from behind the ancient set.

From Crystal’s opening monologue, replete with all of the standard lines about the age of some of the nominees, as well as the montage of films along with the not-so-funny lines that followed them on the screen, the entire evening was almost as dated as the Kodak Theater where the event was held; a somewhat ironic choice of venues considering that Kodak, maker of film had just declared bankruptcy. Crystal was careful to steer clear of that minefield in not lobbing any of the obvious references that a less-reverent host might have chosen for comic ammunition.

To some, Hollywood, a town supposedly noted for being out front on almost everything, never looked so staid and dry. Perhaps most strikingly indicative of Hollywood’s malaise was the winner of Best Picture of the Year, “The Artist” and black and white silent film that is anything but a forward looking film.

This was indeed a pretty boring show. Thank god for Tivo otherwise it would’ve been all the more torturous to have to sit through the commercials. The entire broadcast did seem a little dusty.

Auto Bailout Saves Town

With the Michigan Republican primary just a day away, one of the most publicly debated points among the potential Presidential candidates is the Obama Administration’s bailout of the automobile industry and the merits of this decision. Of course Michigan is car country and so are the states surrounding it. While Detroit is indeed the car producing capital of the U.S. states like Ohio and Indiana are also closely tied to the auto industry and the bailout had far reaching effects on the economies of these states as well.

In his highly publicized remarks at the time and in defense of since, Mitt Romney has stated that the bailout was the wrong strategy by the Obama Administration and that the government should have let the private sector deal with the grave problems being faced by the auto makers, which would have been bankruptcy and restructuring. However, one Indiana town is happy that the Obama Administration did not hear or heed Romney’s advice because since the depths of the crisis in 2008/2009, Kokomo, Indiana has risen from the ashes and now is a town on the move again.

Politics aside, you will be hard-pressed to find anyone in this area of the country that will deny that without the help of Uncle Sam, the devastation to their economy and to their very survival may very well have been permanent; at least that is what the working men and women in these towns will tell you. Partisans probably have other opinions, which now with a primary and an election coming up, it remains to be seen which course of action the people believe was the right one for them.

In Kokomo, the major employer, Chrysler, was on the verge of bankruptcy, unemployment had reached nearly 20%, and over 40% of the small number of homes being sold were foreclosures. Add to that the median price for a house fell to just over $40,000 from $110,000 just a few years prior to 2008. Now, Chrysler is back on top and has pledged to invest more than $1.3 billion in their Kokomo plant while hiring back more than 1,000 workers.

Politicians on both sides of the aisle have views on the automaker bailout but one thing is for certain in Kokomo and the entire area surrounding it, had the government not come to the aid of the auto industry, more than 50% of all employment in the area would have gone away, and for a long period of time. In fact, by the time jobs may have returned following a private industry bankruptcy process, the damage to families in the area would have been a crisis worse than a natural disaster according to many interviewed in Kokomo.

So, while the pols will debate the issue now, prior to the Michigan Republican Primary, and again during the Presidential election process, one thing is not open to debate in Kokomo; without the bailout there may no longer have been much left to Kokomo.

My take:

The bailout is certainly giving Romney something to worry about, his comments regarding it that is. I have never seen so much back peddling in my life from one man. What I would like him to address is what would’ve happened to the working people in Kokomo while the bankruptcy process was slowly dividing up what was left of the scraps.
